OKEAH
Made by Hryckowian
Pronounced Oak-Ee-Ahn, this was the school that I taught English at. Because we were located just off the Sea of Japan, the school had a nautical theme to it. The hill on the left was called the Keetonik, or Baby Whale, and served as the mascot for the school. The right shows the Brigantina, which was the main building for the school, and shaped like a boat. Years earlier, the plan was to give something to the gifted chidren of the Soviet Union. If you were a genius in chemistry, but lived in a village out in the middle of nowhere, you didn't have too many chances to meet other people like yourself, or to cultivate your talents. So the government set up schools across the country, where children would go for a month at a time to study whatever their specialty was. The children would be taught by staff that were mad combinations of game show hosts, teachers, and in general, the most extreme extroverts you've ever met in your life. They would go back to the village, tell the other children about the wonderful time they had, and give them something to strive towards. After the fall of communism, all but two of these schools went bankrupt; OKEAH was one of the ones that survived and is still running today.

24th Birthday
Made by Hryckowian
In many ways, I think that I had the best placement in our group, if for no other reason than I had access to a beach. In the summer month (yeah, I said month), this was the place to be. I had a place staked out where I could have people over, cook shish kabobs over an open fire, keep some beers cool in a stream, and play football or frisbee in a space that we had cleared out. This is my 24th birthday, and the first one I had in Russia. I threw a beach party for myself and my friends. That's me, proudly displaying a Guinness my friends chipped in for me (not cheap, on PC salary), fellow volunteer Kim, Yaroslav, and Sarah in the bottom left corner.
