Colonnade of Anichkov Palace
Made by Istvan
A former imperial palace, built for Empress Elizabeth for 13 years, finished in 1754, named after the nearby Anichkov Bridge (where this photo is taken from) and given to Count Aleksey Razumovsky, Elizabeth's lover and later secretly married husband as a present by her. In 1776 Catherine the Great also donated it to one of her lovers, Prince Patomkin (the Neo-Classical refurbishment of the building comes from the years of his ownership). - The later Romanovs frequently preferred this building to the enormous Winter Palace, e.g. the last Russian Tzar, Nicholas II spent his childhood here. - After 1917 it was nationalized, and served as a ministry, then in the 1930s it was converted to the Young Pioneer Palace, and housed hundreds of after-school clubs for children. To put it in a nutshell, Russian Empresses had a stormy love-life.
