Gottfried Semper's original synagogue was destroyed on Kristallnacht and could not be rebuilt, both because a highway now cuts off the site and because the Holocaust and fifty years of state atheism would make an uninterrupted continuation of the past absurd. This design is, at the base, oriented to the present site's shape, but it rotates 15 degrees through its height to face Jerusalem and also to match the angle fo the old synagogue (whose footprint is, significantly, strewn with bits of crushed glass). Eisenman and Liebeskind, in memorial, use mute concrete as a way of responding to trauma, of displaying an overwhelmed, shut-down mental canvas. Here, Wandel, Hoefer, Lorch and Hirsch use a similar medium at a smaller scale (the standard concrete block) in the context of a building intended for weekly use by living Jews. The twisting of the surface is optically confusing, especially in photos, but it is not intended to disorient, but rather to show the ice beginning to thaw. The building does not forget - but it is alive.

One of the only surviving pieces of the original Synagogue: a Star of David taken from one of the two towers in the midst of the fire. You can read the amazing story yourself. The short version is that the fire department was disgusted at being forbidden from extinguishing the Nazi-set blaze, and conspired to remove the stars and keep one of them hidden away in a series of crates and attics until it could be returned to the Jewish community.

My favorite photo so far, and it happens to be of my favorite building so far. This is an incredible space; to me the great achievement of the Dresden Synagogue is that it manages to carry so much metaphorical weight and be so self-evidently usable and pleasant as an actual space in which to worship. Massive thumbs up.
